How We Build Our Calculators
Each calculator on this site is built from published state statutes and government guidelines — not guesswork. Our child support and small claims tools reference the actual dollar limits and formulas set by each state's courts; our statute of limitations calculator reflects the filing deadlines codified in state civil procedure law; our overtime calculator applies the federal Fair Labor Standards Act threshold alongside state-specific rules where they differ from the federal baseline.
State laws change — legislatures amend statutes, courts issue new interpretations, and dollar thresholds get adjusted for inflation. We review and update the underlying figures periodically, but we can't guarantee every number reflects the very latest amendment the moment it takes effect. If you spot a figure that looks out of date, the fastest way to reach us is the contact page — we'd genuinely like to know.
What These Calculators Are Good For — and What They Aren't
Use these tools to get oriented before a legal conversation: to understand roughly what a small claims court in your state will and won't hear, to get a ballpark estimate of a child support obligation before mediation, or to check whether a filing deadline has likely already passed. That context is genuinely useful walking into an attorney consultation or a court filing.
What they can't do is account for the specific facts of your case — exceptions, tolling provisions that pause a filing deadline, local court rules, or the discretion a judge has in your particular jurisdiction. Legal calculators are a starting point for research, not a substitute for reading the actual statute or talking to a licensed attorney about your situation.
